For the purpose of having a rotary rest able to operate at very high speeds and to guide any section of circular or non-circular bar, which is symmetric or not symmetric, a rotary internal part (5) which can move axially with respect to another rotary internal part (2) carries levers (17), one head of which moves radially, during a mutual axial displacement of the two rotary components, by means of a head part (18) bearing against a tapered internal surface (15) of the other rotary component. Means are provided for axially displacing the rotary components with respect to one another. These rotary components are mounted in non-rotary components (1, 4) and it is between the latter that the mutual axial displacement means (7, 9, 11) then act. This rest finds an advantageous use in being placed between the back of the headstock of an automatic lathe and the front of a feeding device which feeds this automatic lathe with bars of material to be machined. <IMAGE>
