2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (I) is made by continuous reaction of aniline with CS2 and sulphur at high temp. and pressure. in a tubular reactor with a length/dia. ratio of >100, pref. 500-8,000. The eaction is pref. carried out at 200-300 degrees C, esp. 20-260 degrees C, and a pressure of 150 kg./cm2, esp. 40-10 kg./cm2. The linear speed of the mixt. in the reactor is pref. >1 m/h., esp. >5 m/h. (I) is produced in high yield at high space/time prodn. rates. (I) is useful as a vulcanising accelerator.
