PURPOSE:The polymerization of ethylene or the like is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of a solution containing a specific titanium compound and an organoaluminum compound at high temperature and high pressure to achieve the production of homogeneous polyethylene polymer in high yield per unit amount of the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The polymerization of ethylene or a mixture thereof with an alpha- olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms is carried out at a temperature over 125 deg.C and a pressure of 200kg/cm<2> in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) a titanium-containing solution obtained by bringing a magnesium compound of Xn<1>Mg(OR<1>)2-n (X<1> is halogen; R<1> is 1-20C alkyl, phenyl; 0<n<2) into contact with a hydroxy compound of R<2>OH (R<2> is 3-20C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, phenyl) and a titanium compound of (R<3>O)mTiX4-m<2> (R<3> is 1-20C alkyl; X<2> is halogen; m=0-4) in an inert hydrocarbon solvent and of (B) an organoaluminum compound of Rn<4>AlX3-n (R<4> is 1-8C alkyl, phenyl, 7-10C aralkyl; n=1-3). |
