1287526 Polyolefin derivatives LUBRIZOL CORP 25 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 14525/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Compositions suitable as lubricant and fuel additives are prepared by reacting (A) at least one saturated aliphatic polycarboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof, optionally substituted, containing at least 50 carbon atoms, (B) at least one aliphatic polyhydric alcohol containing 2 or 3 hydroxyl groups and (C) at least one aliphatic polyhydric alcohol containing at least 4 hydroxyl groups, under esterification conditions in a molar ratio of A : B : C of 1 : X : Y where X+Y lies between 5 and 0À5. Component (A) may be a reaction product of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or halide with a polyolefin, halogenated polyolefin or polyolefin having nitro, mercapto, carbonyl or formyl substituents, or may be a hydrolysed polynitrile or oxidized polyalcohol. Component (B) may be ethylene, propylene, trimethylene, butylene or polyalkylene glycols, glycerol, hydroxyalkylamines or polyhydroxy acids or esters thereof. Component (C) may be a hydroxyalkyl amine, dipentaerythritol, arabitose, glucose, pentacrythritol, erythritol, threitol, ribitol, xylitol, arabitol, sorbitol or mannitol. The reaction may be effected in an inert organic diluent in the presence of a catalyst. If desired (A) and (B) may be prereacted before reaction with (C). The products may be after treated with bases, e.g. amines or alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides or alkoxides; epoxides or lower carboxylic acids. Many suitable reactants are listed and examples describe the reaction of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride with (1-3 and 6) trimethylol propane and pentacrythritol, (4) trimethylol ethane and pentacrythritol, (5) trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane and pentacrythritol, (7) trimethylol propane, pentacrythritol and sorbitol, (9) trihydroxypropylamine and pentacrythritol, (11) tris(methylol) aminomethane and pentacrythritol and (12) glycerol and pentacrythritol; polypropenyl succinic anhydride with (8) propylene glycol and mannitol; and reaction product of brominated polyhexene- 1 and 2-pentene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid with (10) trimethylol propane and pentacrythritol. |
