PURPOSE:To perform the measurement of the size of a large item to be machined and the centering work thereof readily, by providing a mechanism, which chucks the outer diameter of a work, and providing sensors, which simultaneously measure the surface to be machined. CONSTITUTION:The measurement of the total length L of a work 1 is performed by the following way. Non-contact sensors 35, 35a, 35b and 35c are set on the same vertical surfaces of measuring and centering units 7A and 7B. The size LX between the non-contact sensors is measured. Then the units 7A and 7B are driven by motors 10A and 10B and moved in the directions of surfaces to be machined 1A and 1B. When a distance between any of the sensors and the surface to be machined becomes SX, the movement of the units 7A and 7B is stopped. Meanwhile, the amounts of movement lA and lB of the units 7A and 7B are measured by scales 60A and 60B at the lower surfaces of the units 7A and 7B. Thus the total length L of the work is obtained. The centering is performed by chucking the outer diameter by a chuck that is not shown, with the work 1 being lifted. |
