An electrothermal device for atomising a sample in a magnetic field of the type used in atomic absorption spectrometers is distinguished by the fact that a sample chamber is provided which is constructed as a conductor loop (10) in which the current flowing is high enough to heat the interior of the chamber to the atomisation temperature of the sample and at the same time induce a magnetic field in the conductor loop which produces a Zeeman splitting of the resonance line of a target element in the sample in its atomic vapour.
