The novel inertial instrument uses a suspension which surrounds the inertial mass part. In a preferred exemplary embodiment, the inertial mass element is beaker-shaped and supports the magnet elements exerting torque. The torque coils can be arranged in the interior of the inertial mass element in the vicinity of the magnet elements. In a preferred exemplary embodiment, axially magnetised magnetic discs which are stacked in the inertial mass element cooperate with torus-shaped torque coils. In another embodiment, numerous magnet segments are arranged in a cylinder in the interior of the inertial mass element. Together with the torque magnets, the torque coils control the alignment of the inertial mass element with reference to a reference axis which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the suspension. In another exemplary embodiment, a bar magnet in the mass element cooperates with a torque coil extending in the circumferential direction. This configuration of a gyro makes it necessary for the current pulses generating the restoring torque to be supplied only during the correct instants as the rotor rotates. The instrument can be either a dynamically tuned gyroscope, if the suspension is connected to a device which produces a rotation, or an accelerometer, in which case the suspension then ... with a fixed frame ...
