A rear-viewing device of this kind consists usually of rearview mirrors which are designed as centre-mounted mirrors or wing mirrors. Wing mirrors only ever show a portion of the traffic area behind the vehicle. Centre-mounted mirrors only permit the rear window of the vehicle to be seen through, this view depending considerably on the design of the vehicle body. If the rear window is obstructed, a centre-mounted mirror is of no use. Overall viewing of the area (10) behind the vehicle is however made possible in that a viewing device (2) is arranged on the vehicle roof (1a) and a receiving device (4) is arranged in the interior (3) of the vehicle and in that the image obtained of the area (10) behind the vehicle can be reproduced on a viewing screen (6) of the receiving device (4) by means of a transmission path (5) running through the vehicle roof (1a).
