According to main patent (82 P 2061 DE), an auxiliary voltage source (6) is provided which continuously applies a relatively high frequency auxiliary voltage to the discharge lamp (1), whose brightness can then be set in wide limits using a conventional controller. In the case of such an arrangement, if the lamp is initially taken only from the socket located in the heating circuit on the earth side and, at the same time, touches one of the three connection pins, then the auxiliary current can initially flow via this person, followed by a dangerous main current, as a result of the ionization caused thereby. In order to prevent this, according to the invention, the heating circuit on the earth side is monitored for an interruption and, in the absence of a current in the heating circuit, the auxiliary voltage is switched off. <IMAGE>
