A method is disclosed for heat treating a pipe or a pipe conduit for nuclear or thermal power stations and chemical plants, the said method making it possible to increase the strength of a welded joint between pipe sections. The temperature difference between the inner wall surface and the outer wall surface of a pipe is produced by inductive heating, allowing residual tensile stresses caused during welding to be eliminated by thermal stresses. It is furthermore possible to vary the density of the flux induced by the windings during the inductive heating, making it possible to improve the controllability and repeatability of the induction heating.
