PURPOSE:To expand visual sensation and to prevent generation of a shadow in a display by providing a metallic grating type polarizer on a base plate on the inside of a cell. CONSTITUTION:A metallic grating type polarizer of a visible region is provided on the inside (the side in contact with a liquid electrode) of an electrode base plate and a liquid crystal display element is formed by using such base plate. Said polarizer is formed by holographic lithography. More specifically, a film 2 of metal such as Cr deposited by evaporation is formed on a glass base plate 1 and a photoresist layer 3 is provided thereon and is subjected to holographic exposing by using laser light, by which grooves 4 having a sinusoidal shape (about 0.3mu) are formed on the layer 3. The layer 3 as a mask is subjected to composite etching, shaved to the film 2 and thereafter the remaining layer 3 is removed. The polarizer consisting of the metallic film deposited by evaporation at a desired lattice spacing is thus obtd. |
