PURPOSE:To produce pseudocumene or durene from benzene, toluence or xylene, in high efficiency, by using a catalyst comprising a crystalline fluorine-containing aluminosilicate, borosilicate or boroaluminosilicate. CONSTITUTION:Pseudocumene or durene is produced by methylating benzene, toluene or xylene in the presence of a fluorine-containing crystalline aluminosilicate, a fluorine-containing crystalline borosilicate or a fluorine-containing cystalline boroaluminosilicate. The side reactions such as the transmethylation of the raw materials or the products, the decomposition of the methylation agent, etc. can be suppressed, and the objective compound is produced in improved conversion and selectivity. Since the catalyst has long life, the process can be operated continuously for a long period, and one or both of the objective compounds can be produced slectively by properly slecting the reaction condition. |
