A wrist-mounted pulse monitor improves the speed and accuracy of heart rate measurement by providing digital readout of the rate of heartbeat and includes a sensor (2) mounted on the monitor casing (10) which is capable of detecting a heartbeat in a region where a heartbeat pulse normally occurs, a transducer (24) coupled to the sensor (22) for transforming each detected pulse into an electrical signal, a clock source (28 and 94) for producing electrical pulses at a predetermined frequency, a series of registers (42, 48 and 62) coupled to the transducer and the clock source for counting the number of pulses occuring between detected heartbeats, and an arithmetic unit (80) coupled to the counting registers for converting the counted clock pulse to a heartbeat rate and a display (90) for visually displaying the rate in digital form. |
