A disc type centrifugal separator comprises a vessel contg. a generally annular piston located between the inner surface of the vessel and the outer surface of an inner ring. The vessel wall has material discharge parts whereby movement of the piston either closes such ports or ejects material through them. The outer surfaces of the ring and piston each have a groove into which a control fluid part opens and which are each outwardly sealed by a ring that bows outwardly under the control fluid pressure. Used for sludge sepn. The seals protect the surfaces against abrasive particles during movement of the piston.
