A number of different measuring devices are housed in the pointed ends of shafts which can be screwed into the handle. The sensors include a pH detector, a humidity detector and a temperature detector. The sensor is linked by wires to an electronic read-out just below or just above the junction with the handle. The outer skin of the shaft may carry a graduated scale to establish the depth in the soil at which measurements are taken. One version of the tool has a soil-sampling cavity at the end; another uses a bayonet-type connection in place of the screw fitting.
