The title compds.(I; Q1 = -(CH2)2-CXQ1Q2 or m-C6H4X; Q2,Q3 = H or C1-4 alkyl; X = CN, COOH or 5-tetrazolyl; -OZ2 = C1-4 alkoxy or benzyloxy; Z3 = phormyl; -OZ2Z3 and benzene ring form benzofuran ring) were prepd. by the reduction of II. Compds. (I) are useful in the palliation of haemoglobinopathies, esp. sickle cell anaemia. They prevent the onset of sickling in vitro in whole homozygous human sickle-cell blood and also restore sickle cells to their normal shape.
