A floor comprises parallel spaced beams (11) and polystyrene foam blocks (13) laid on the beam flanges (12) between the beams to bridge the gaps, and an upper layer supported by the blocks which act as load-bearing members. The beams are pref. of reinforced concrete and the upper layer is of boards laid on the blocks. - The blocks may have upper flanges (14) extending over the top of at least one of the adjacent beams such that the blocks form a continuous flat upper surface, with the depth of each block above the beam flanges no less than 100 mm. The distance between adjacent beam flanges is pref. not more than 600 mm. The arrangement allows the foam to be used both as insulation and load-bearing material.
