A coin-operated gaming machine is controlled by a microprocessor unit and includes a facility for data acquisition by a portable hand-held unit. The unit has a photo-detector built into the nose (31) of the unit and located against the LED display (33) of the gaming machine. The unit has a read/write switch (37), indicator (35), DIN counter (36) and on/off switch (34). - The ming machine generates serial data indicating the number of jackpot wins, door openings, games played etc. The data, in ASCIT code form are down loaded via a serial link to a serial to parallel convertor providing data which can be analysed and logged. The data may be stored on e.g. magnetic tape.
