PURPOSE:To provide high-speed responsiveness by constituting a titled element so that a voltage for orienting an optical modulating substance having bistability to the first and the second stable states and a set voltage between threshold voltages of the first and the second stable states have a specified relation, between a scanning electrode and a signal electrode. CONSTITUTION:In case when the thickness of a liquid crystal cell is thinned, the spiral structure of a liquid crystal molecule is loosened even if a state that an electric field is not applied, and a dipole moment P or P' takes a state of an upward direction 34 or a downward direction 34'. When an electric field E or E' exceeding a prescribed threshold level and having a different polarity is provided to such a cell, the liquid crystal molecule is oriented to one of the first stable state 33 or the second stable state 33'. As for voltages VON1, VON2 oriented to the first and the second stable states in a selecting point, it is desirable with respect of stability that values of ¦VON1¦ and ¦VON2¦ are two times or above with respect to a value of ¦VOFF¦, in case of considering the variance between the elements or in the element. |
