The engine can, on the one hand, be used as an internal combustion engine, in which the combustion pressure drives a piston (3) in an annular working chamber (6). On the other hand, if the process is reversed, the engine can be operated as a pump. Due to the circular movement of the piston, the upward and downward movements with their losses, as is usual in hitherto known internal combustion engines, do not apply. Owing to the absence of compression phases, low octane fuels can be used. The ratio of the preparation phases to the working phase is approximately 1:2; in the known spark-ignition engine it is 3:1. A long combustion travel in relation to the preparation phase is intended to produce good combustion of the gases so that a significant reduction of the exhaust pollutant emissions is obtained. <IMAGE>
