PURPOSE:To improve reliability and coupling efficiency with simple assembling by constituting a titled circuit in which the two optical waveguides transmitting two beams of polarizing light intersecting orthogonally with each other are coupled to the 3rd optical waveguide via a photocoupling part being in proximity in parallel. CONSTITUTION:The 1st optical waveguide 2 in a base plate 1 maintains and transmits the polarized light A in a vertical direction and the 2nd optical waveguide 3 the polarized light B in a horizontal direction, respectively. The shape and refractive index of the 3rd optical waveguide 4 are so set that the optical coupling parts 4a and 4b in proximity with the 3rd waveguide 4 in parallel therewith transmit respectively only the polarized light A and B. The deviation and inclination of the optical axis are therefore not generated at all between the waveguides 2, 3 and the waveguide 4 and since the waveguides are formed within one base plate 1, the assembling is easy, reliability is high and since there is no leakage in the optical coupling parts, the coupling efficiency is improved. It is also possible to transmit conversely the polarized light from the waveguide 4 to the 1st and 2nd waveguides and to use the device as an optical multiplexing and demultiplexing device. |
