PURPOSE:To enable an efficient printing disregarding the matching of the printing direction with the width and the length of a paper by arranging vertical printing elements and horizontal printing elements in one row each on the thermal head. CONSTITUTION:In a printer for printing a dot matrix type character with the platen 2 rotatable forward and reversely, vertical printing elements 21c and horizontal printing elements 21d are arranged in one row each on the thermal head 21a at a printing section 21. When printing horizontally, during the horizontal movement of the carriage 4, the vertical printing elements 21c of the thermal head 21a are energized to print on one line. When printing vertically, to match the printing direction with the length of a printing paper 3, the horizontal printing elements 21d are energized during the feeding of the paper to print on one line. |
