PURPOSE:To apply a magnetic disk controller even to a magnetic disk drive different in defective flag position, by providing a detecting circuit into the controller to detect a defective flag out of the read data based on the position information on the defective flag bit fed from a high-order device. CONSTITUTION:The defective flag position information (counter initial value) 100 on the ID part of a connected magnetic disk drive 25 is loaded to a register 1 by a high-order device 23. The register 1 sets the initial value of a binary counter 2. This initial value is changed by the device 23 in response to the defective flag position of the drive 25. Thus a magnetic disk drive controller 21 can discriminate the defective tracks of various disk drives having different defective flag positions. As a result, the controller 21 is applied even to magnetic disk drives different in defective flag position. |
