PURPOSE:To obtain a chilled roll with much superior wear resistance by heat treating a material for a chilled roll having a specified composition under restricted conditions so as to provide a martensite matrix with higher hardness and uniformity. CONSTITUTION:A chilled alloy consisting of, by weight, 3.0-4.2% C, 0.1-2.0% Si, 0.3-2.0% Mn, 0.01-0.5% P, <=0.1% S, 0.2-4.0% Ni, 0.2-18.0% Cr, 0.1-6.0% Mo, 2.0-10.0% W, 0.2-5.0% Co or further contg. <=3.0% V and the balance Fe is used as the material of the outer layer of a roll. The chilled material is heat treated by heating to 850-1,100 deg.C, holding at the temp., cooling at 100-1,000 deg.C/ hr cooling rate, and holding at 400-560 deg.C for 1-50hr. |
