A single facsimile machine can alternately use a subscriber telephone line and a leased telephone line. When it is connected to a processor or computer, the facsimile machine serves as an input/output terminal of the computer. A scrambler or similar external device can be assigned to the facsimile machine, in order to be used jointly by the subscriber line or the leased telephone line. Furthermore, a memory can be used so that the facsimile machine can receive a message via both lines simultaneously.
