In the case of a two-stroke opposed piston internal combustion engine the two pistons arranged in a cylinder are held by their cross heads on a common cross head guide, which is arranged as an extension of the cylinder towards the crank shaft and is designed as cylinder liner with an outer guideway for the cross head of the upper piston and an inner guideway for the cross head of the lower piston.
