A loading device for large-calibre weapons, having an extractor which can be driven to move to and fro in a loading tube and which carries radially movable grippers for grasping the ammunition, which endeavour under prestress to assume their position of rest located radially outwards from the gripping position, but which are held in their gripping position inside the loading tube by bearing against the inner face of the latter. The extractor is equipped with a feeler which projects in its direction of movement beyond its contour facing the ammunition and which, when it comes up against the ammunition, is movable towards the extractor counter to a prestress loading it. A gear connects the feeler to the grippers and is suitable for transferring the grippers into their gripping position by picking up the movement of the feeler into its tensioning position. A release device arranged on the extractor is suitable for releasing the gear connection between the feeler and grippers. There are means which are suitable for picking up the relative movement between the loading tube and extractor and, in the event of a movement of the extractor in the direction of the loading-tube orifice intended for receiving or dispensing the ammunition, for transferring the release device into its position of rest and, in the event of a movement in the opposite direction, for transferring the release device into its active release position with a response delay, the response delay corresponding to a travel which the extractor ... out of the ... for grasping the ammunition ...
