With the aid of tangentially adjusted agitators, producing both thrust and spin, arranged in the vicinity of the bottom of a cylindrical vessel, a flow is produced in the vessel, which rotates both about the vertical axis of the vessel and in a toroidal manner therein. Material of relatively high specific gravity is deposited in the region of the centre of the vessel bottom. From there it can be discharged downwards. The present invention is suitable in particular for the treatment of waste waters having a high level of organic pollutants.
