Insulated exhaust pipe for motor vehicles and a method and apparatus for its manufacture

A description is given of a method for the installation or attachment of an insulation made of temperature-stable material and surrounded by a flexible metal tube on motor-vehicle exhaust pipes subject to thermal stress, relative to a rigid pipe, by means of which method a hollow cylinder of the insulating material mounted on or inserted in the flexible metal tube is pushed into or onto the rigid pipe with the aid of an adaptor sleeve or a tapered mandrel, compressing the insulating material. This results in a positive, firm join between the pipe, the insulating material and the flexible metal tube.
