PURPOSE:To make it possible to damp or cease vibration of a wire electrode which generates upon electrical discharge machining, by generating high-frequency oscillation for damping or ceasing the free-vibration of the wire electrode with the use of electrostrict materials or magnetostrict materials. CONSTITUTION:When a wire electrode 1 comes to a position indicated by the chain line due to generation of vibration, the capacitances or distances between detectors 14a vary, and therefore, these variations in capacitance are taken out by means of vibration detecting devices 14 to discriminate the frequency, amplitude and direction of the vibration of the electrode 1 with the use of vibration detectors 14b which delivers detection signals to vibration drive and control devices 10d for vibrators 10a. Each device 10d controls magnetic excitation to an electrostrict member 10a which is disposed in the same phase as that of each vibration detecting device 14 that detects displacing vibration from the center position of the electrode, so that there is generated oscillation having the inverse phase but the equal amplitude with respect to the detected free vibration of the electrode 1. The oscillation of the electrostrict member 10a is applied, as vibrating force having an inverse phase, to the electrode 1 through a ring 11 so that the electrode 1 is excited by being contacted with the ring 11, thereby the free vibration of the electrode 1 may be damped, ceased or extinguished. |
