The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aromatic homocyclic or heterocyclic amino-nitro compounds by selective partial reduction of corresponding di- or polynitro compounds, the reduction being carried out with ascorbic acid or salts thereof in a basic reaction medium. The invention furthermore relates to the novel 3-amino-5-nitro-2,6-dimethoxypyridine and 3-amino-5,7-dinitrotropolone compounds prepared by the process according to the invention.
