The invention relates to an apparatus for the extra-oral preparation of teeth, especially of teeth to be re-implanted and transplanted (4). In order to prevent damage to, or drying-out of, the periodontal membrane during the preparation it is proposed, according to the invention, that the tooth be stored in a container (20) filled with a jelly-like nutrient medium (28) during the preparation, the container having at least two openings (23) which permit orthograde and retrograde accessibility of the tooth (4). The tooth is fixed with a retaining device (3) by means of clamping jaws (14) resting against the crown of the tooth, the container (20) being connected with this retaining device (3). A cooling device (26, 27, 29) is provided for controlling the temperature of the jelly-like nutrient medium (28), and this cooling device furthermore prevents damage to the periodontal membrane of the tooth due to the heat generated during the preparation. <IMAGE>
