PURPOSE:In reaction between a norbornene containing a polar functional group and hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a specific catalyst, to obtain the titled compound in high yield, by subjecting a catalytic layer and a reaction product layer to phase separation under cooling. CONSTITUTION:A polar functional group-containing norbornene shown by the formula I (X is polar functional group) is reacted with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a cobalt carbonyl compound (e.g., dicobalt octacarbonyl) and an organic tertiary phosphine (e.g., tri-n-butylphosphine) to give the desired compound shown by the formula II. In the reaction, the reaction is carried out in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, the reaction mixture is cooled, separated into a solvent layer containing the catalyst and a reaction product layer, and the solvent layer is circulated through the reaction zone. After the reaction is over, the desired reaction product is separated from the catalyst by phase separation under cooling, so that a resinous substance is not prepared as a by-product during separation through distillation, the recovery ratio of the desired substance is raised. |
