The invention relates to a ship for scooping up oil floating on the sea, which ship moves abeam when in service and as a result impounds a carpet of oil and scoops up this oil through slots in the side wall of the ship. Since such a ship moving abeam will possibly roll to a considerable extent in a swell, the two ends of the ship are to be connected according to the invention to the midship section by one joint each in such a way that they can be swung through 90 DEG from the longitudinal axis of the ship during service. The rolling is thereby reduced and the capacity of the ship to scoop up oil is improved.
