It has been found that imidazole dicarboxylic acid derivatives of the general formula wherein R<1> represents a lower alkyl group and X represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group which optionally has a substituent, and in which the amino group may carry a protective group, esters and salts thereof, show high activity against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and therefore are useful pharmaceutical agents.
