PURPOSE:To obtain a colorless, transparent, highly heat-resistant, thermoplastic polymer useful as a material for weak-current parts, optical fibers, etc., by polymerizing t-butyl methacrylate by continuous bulk polymerization or continuous solution polymerization and heating the reaction product in a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:t-Butyl methacrylate monomer (hereinafter abbreviated as t-BMA) is polymerized by continuous bulk polymerization or continuous solution polymerization. The reaction product is heated at 200 deg.C or above for 0.1-60min in a vacuum. By this heating six-membered ring acid anhydride groups of the formula are formed in the molecule. A representative of the above polymers comprises 95-100wt% six-membered acid anhydride ring units of the above formula and 5-0wt% methacrylic acid units and contains no t-BMA unit present after the polymerization reaction. The methacrylic acid units are formed by elimination of an isobutene molecule from the t-BMA unit. |
