When a cake of coke is being discharged from the oven the temperature is measured at preselected points of the surface of the side wall, as well as a first series of time references corresponding to these temperature measurements. The temperature of the side face of the cake of coke is also measured at a number of points which is at least equal to the number of points of measurement of the side wall, as well as a second series of the corresponding time references. From this second series at least one time reference is chosen corresponding to a time reference of the first series and from this is deduced the value of the temperature at a geometrically corresponding point of the surface of the side wall and of the side face of the cake of coke. <IMAGE>
