PURPOSE:To reduce a vertical smear by using a signal in a storage device to compensate the output signal of a solid-state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:Before reading a signal charge stored in a photosensing part, a charge equivalent to noise charge such as a vertical smear or the like is stored in a vertical signal line 7. This stored charge is read out from a horizontal shift register 14, and the charge of the vertical signal line 7 is transferred and is stored in a temporary storage device during this read time. This stored signal is used to compensate the output signal of the solid-state image pickup element.
