<p>Aromatic polyethers comprising phenylene gps., O atoms and -CO- or -SO2- gps. are prepd. by reacting at least one dialkali metal salt of a bisphenol fo formula (I) (a) or (b) with at least one dihalide of formula (II): where at least 95% of the -OH gps. in (I) are in the p- position, Q = SO2 or CO, X = F, Cl or Br, m and m' = 0, 1, 2, or 3 and n and n' = 1, 2, or 3. The mixt. is first heated to 200 degrees -250 degrees C in the presence of an aromatic sulphone of formula (III): (where Y represents a direct linkage, an O atom or 2 H atoms, one attached to each ring, Z and Z' are H or Ph and can be the same or different, the mixt. is heated to 260 degrees -400 degrees C and the proportions are initially 30-49.99 mol. % of the dialkali metal salt of (I) to 70-50.01 mol. % of (II), while after raising the temp. as indicated at least 0.01 mol. of (I) per 100 mols. mixt. is added to bring the (I):(II) ratio to 50:50. The process, previously described in GB 1,414,421, furnishes particularly good polymers, if an excess of dihalide is used as in the invention and more bisphenate is added later, giving a prod. of higher reduced viscosity.</p> |
