The uniform heating or cooling of sand takes place in a tall hopper with sidewalls converging towards the bottom, where there is a discharge port. A flow channelling insert extends almost up to this port, and comprises a number of ducts forming an inverted truncated cone when assembled. The flow regulator (7) extends right across the hopper, and immediately above it is a heater coil (6) for producing the desired temperature change in the hopper contents. The flow controller comprises a series of vertical intersecting plates forming ducts of rectangular section. The planes of the plates converge, as do the plate edges so as to fit against the hopper wall.
