PURPOSE:To form easily a synthesized latent image on an electrostatic charge drum from a positive image by irradiating the negative image converted by a positive-negative image converting element constituted by providing at least a photoconductor layer, light reflecting layer and liquid crystal layer between transparent electrodes to the electrifying drum to form the latent image then irradiating laser thereto to add further the latent image onto said drum. CONSTITUTION:The operation of a converting element 7 is such that the resistance of a photoconductor layer 3 in the part irradiated with light decreases and that when a substantial voltage is impressed on a liquid crystal layer 6 in said part, the molecular arrangement in said part is disturbed to make said part opaque owing to the light scattering induced by such disturbance. On the other hand, the central part where no light is irradiated has the large resistance of the layer 3 and therefore the voltage to the extent of orienting the liquid crystal molecules is not applied to the liquid crystal layer of said part and the transparent state is maintained. A light shielding layer 4 prevents passage of the light 11 reflected from an original 8 through the element 7 and a light reflecting layer 5 is so provided as to reflect the light 12 irradiated from the lower side to the element 7 and projects the same to an electrostatic charge drum. If the device is so constituted to irradiate the original 8 with the light source and to irradiate the bottom surface of the converting element as well, the positive image is converted to a negative image and is projected onto the electrostatic charge drum. |
