On the reference voltage measuring wire 8 which connects the regulator 7 to the + terminal of the battery 3, a diode 14 or a resistor is mounted in series and can be short-circuited by a relay 10 or a field-effect transistor controlled by an electronic module comprising a delay timer 13 and a sensor 21 of the intensity of the charging current of the battery 3 which is connected to a threshold comparator 20. When the diode 14 is short-circuited, the regulator 7 supplies the exciter 6 so that the alternator 1 charges the battery 3 to the nominal voltage. When the diode 14 is in circuit, the battery 3 is charged to a greater voltage for a time specified by the control module, thus decreasing the time for recharging the battery without damaging it.
