PURPOSE:To produce the titled substance useful as a raw material of synthetic polymers and organic chemicals, from a hydroquinone compound, easily, without producing by-products, by using a montmorillonite catalyst wherein a specific amount of the exchangeable ion is composed of a specific metallic ion other than alkali metal ion. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is produced by reacting a hydroquinone compound or a hydroquinone compound and a monohydric phenol in the presence of preferably 5-40%, based on the raw materials, of a montmorillonite catalyst wherein at least 10mol% of the ion exchange capacity is attributable to a metallic ion other than alkali metal ion, e.g. aluminum ion, titanium ion, chromium ion, zirconium ion, etc. The reaction is carried out by using an alkylbenzene such as toluene, xylene, etc. as the solvent, at a raw material concentration of 5-20% at about 20-200 deg.C. |
