PURPOSE:To prevent the coming-off of an ink ribbon from a guide, by a method wherein a heat generating head is at first separated from a platen after thermal transfer printing is finished during the forward movement of a carriage and, subsequently, an ink ribbon is sent to be separated from the platen before the carriage is subjected to backward movement. CONSTITUTION:In a thermal transfer printing apparatus for performing recording by bringing a heat generating head into contact with paper under pressure through an ink ribbon only during the forward movement of a carriage 14, the heat generating head 22 is at first separated from a platen 10 (from the ink ribbon 42) in returning the carriage 14 after recording is performed by the forward movement of the carriage 14 and, subsequently, the ink ribbon 42 is separated from paper 12 by pulling the ink ribbon 42 to the return direction of the carriage 14 to return the carriage 14 to a printing start position after or while said ink ribbon is moved to said direction. |
