Projecting inwards on the inside surface of the skirt of the cap are two ribs (4,5) each terminating in an upwardly extending part (10). Also inside the cap is a seal (6) with a flat part (6b) on the top projecting upwards from a U-shaped annular part (6a,c) and terminating in an outer ring (6d). The bottle neck carries two sloping ribs (8,9) which slide on the sloping top surfaces of the ribs inside the cap during rotation, until stopped by the vertical parts (20). As this forces the cap downwards, the U-shaped part of the seal is forced inside the bottle neck (7a). The axial travel of the ribs on the neck is less than the axial travel of the U-shaped part of the seal. The cap is used with gaseous beverages or sparkling wines, preventing the frothy mixture from being dischaged as a spray.
