A protective device (1) (Fig. 1) has a protective shield (2) which is mounted adjustably on a holder (3). The protective device serves to shield against X-radiation (Pf 2) on one side of the shield (2) by comparison with the operating zone (26) on the other side of the shield (2). The protective shield (2) has two mutually spaced, parallel guide plates (4, 5) between which juxtaposed blade elements (6) which are guided displaceably relative to one another are supported. Said blade elements can emerge at the lower end of the shield (2), and they rest with their lower ends (15) on a patient, in accordance with the body contour (16). In so doing, the lower blade regions form a ray-proofing fence automatically matched to the body contour (16). Both the blade elements (6) and at least one of the guide plates (4 or 5) consist of ray-shielding, in particular lead-containing material. The protective shield (2) can be mounted both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction on a X-ray table, in particular by use of an adjustable holder (3) on standard longitudinal rails (17) of the X-ray table or the like. <IMAGE>
