A device for re-inking a printer ink ribbon has a relatively large ink supply container whose contents are delivered to the ink ribbon by means of an applicator head which contacts the ink ribbon. A metering device is provided which controls the outflow from the ink supply container as a function of a predeterminable number of characters printed by the printing mechanism, which number is established by a character counter or the like.
