In order to simplify the playing time setting customary in electronic chess clocks by means of a multiplicity of switches or input keys, permanently prescribed time programs are provided which can be called up via a single control element. The control element can be constructed as a program key which can simultaneously have the function of a key for switching on and for interrupting the game. The player keys can be used in conjunction with the program key to set arbitrarily prescribable playing times. Other control and display functions of the electronic chess clock can also be executed by only the one program key in conjunction with player keys. <IMAGE>
