A headrest for motor vehicle seats has at least one upholstered head support bar which is held tight in a non-detachable and non-displaceable manner in a plastic sleeve which can be plugged, and locked, into the frame of the backrest. For a locked plug-in engagement of the plastic sleeve in the frame of the backrest, at least one expanding wing can be engaged transversely with respect to the upholstered head support bar and can be arrested in its expanded locking position either by means of the frame of the backrest itself or by means of special locking means. The plastic sleeve has an extension which points towards the upholstered head support and encloses at least the area of the upholstered head support bar located between the top of the backrest and the underside of the head upholstery. The support bar system formed by the upholstered head support bar and plastic sleeve is easy to mount and to manufacture.
