The invention relates to an internal combustion engine and a method for its operation. In the internal combustion engine (1), a piston (4) functions in both directions, and a crank casing (5) is connected by way of an overflow duct (17) to a combustion chamber (11). Through the crank casing (5), air is drawn in by way of an inlet port (14) at each second stroke, which air is first enclosed, compressed in the overflow duct (17), and on the compression stroke flows into the combustion chamber, a volume correspondingly to the piston stroke then again being conveyed through the overflow duct (17) into the combustion chamber (11) by the then descending cylinder. This measure increases the charging of the combustion chamber (11) and thereby improves the power and efficiency of the internal combustion engine(1). <IMAGE>
